East Lothian & Berwickshire Soil & Nutrient Network Farm – 1st Meeting

This is the launch meeting of the East Lothian & Berwickshire soil & nutrient network farm which is being hosted by Niall Jeffrey of Biel Grange Farm. The family farm over 1200 acres of land; which includes 700 acres of arable cropping growing winter barley, oilseed rape and wheat, also supports a 240 suckler beef enterprise.

Over the next 12 months the project will look at soil and nutrient management, with the aim of:

  • Optimising fertiliser inputs and costs
  • Identifying actions to improve soil structure and soil health
  • Making the best use of organic manures

The first meeting is about getting to know the farm soils and current nutrient status. In addition soil specialist Professor Bryan Griffths will focus on the chemical, physical and biological interactions which make up soil health.
