Exploring the potential of machair cropping, Liniclate, Benbecula

Machair cropping is one of the unique features of crofting in Uist.

At this meeting, with guest speaker Derek Hanton from SAC Consulting, we will look at how crop husbandry can be improved to boost yields and quality.  We will also consider what alternatives there are to traditional Uist corn.  As well as being crucial for supporting crofter’s livestock, the machair is also home to an abundance of wildlife and floral diversity.  Local staff from the RSPB will explain some of the actions crofters can take to ensure this is protected and enhanced.
