New Entrants to Farming – Winter Planning (Borders)

Book

The first Borders FAS New Entrant meeting of the 2018/19 series will be held on Thursday 15th November, 7.30pm at the Cross Keys Hotel, Kelso, TD5 7HL.

The poor spring and dry summer have had a big impact on grass and crop growth in 2018, which is having a knock-on effect this winter with rising feed and bedding costs. This meeting will cover various topics to help plan for the winter ahead, including:

  • Making the most of the forage options available this winter
  • Feed budgeting and out-wintering options
  • Building resilience using decision support tools (examples with Farmax software)

We will run a practical session on calculating forage stocks where everyone is welcome to bring along their own farm silage analysis. We will also discuss the benefits of forage crops and alternative wintering for sheep and cattle.

This is a free event open to all new entrants and young farmers with refreshments provided.
