Suckler Cow and Bull Management Workshop (Orkney)
Around 80 attendees came to Braebuster Farm, Deerness on 29th August, to hear talks from Gavin Hill, Karen Stewart from SAC Consulting. As well as Liz Flett and John Davidson from Flett and Carmichael Vets.
Braebuster farm is a suckler cow unit with around 300 cows and is a good example of a farm that has changed it’s management to fit around the changes in the subsidy system.
The day included a quick tour of the cows and calves with the farmer Keith Eunson on hand to discuss the shift from selling at 18-20 months old to 12-14 months old.
Gavin Hill, SAC Consulting Beef Specialist covered topics on the current trade of cattle,
selling cattle younger and smaller, and recent research into growth paths for cattle.
Karen Stewart, SAC Consulting Feeding Consultant covered topics on the importance of analysing silage, preparing rations for the coming winter, and the importance of weighing cows and young stock to ensure rations are correct and ensure they continue to perform through winter.
Liz Flett and John Davidson, from Flett and Carmichael Vets discussed the possible causes and stresses on young cattle which could lead to pneumonia as well as the impact of IBR on a farm and just how wide spread it is on Scotland.
