Understanding Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) (Shetland)
The workshop provides active participation to help producers gain a better understanding and develop their ability to select bulls for specific purposes on the farm.
Potential buyers will also benefit from the day as we will work with catalogues for imminent bull sales.
Precautions to follow when importing cattle to Shetland to minimise the risk of jeopardising Shetland’s high health status will be covered by Hilary Burgess MRCVS who is the manager of the Shetland Animal Health Scheme.
EBVs provide information which help commercial beef farmers identify bulls which breed calves that maximise returns for the store producer and finisher. The information can also assist in selecting bulls for their ability to provide good milky replacements and those that are best to go on as heifers to avoid calving difficulties.
The above will be covered by SAC Consulting Beef Specialist Gavin Hill
