Digestate - Storage & Application
Digestate, a by-product of an anaerobic digestion system is a useful fertiliser that can deliver both organic matter and nutrients to farm soils. It can take one of three forms:
- whole, unseparated digestate
- separated solid digestate
- separated liquid digestate
The nutrients provided by the digestate will depend on the feedstock from which it is made from and as such it has a variable nutrient content a recent nutrient analysis is key to ensuring that you know what nutrients are being applied and the economic value of the product.
There are a number of legal requirements when storing and applying digestate on the farm. The most important thing is that any digestate used on farmland must meet the specific requirements of SEPA and the NVZ regulations of the area where it is being spread. Find out more below.
