Get Funded Specialist Advice to Benefit from Trees on your Farm or Croft
30 July 2025Planting trees on farms and crofts can help prevent livestock heat stress, increase water use efficiency and reduce the effects of erosion from wind and runoff. Trees on farms can also reduce on-farm emissions and support climate mitigation by acting as a carbon sink, absorbing and storing carbon from the atmosphere. The Scottish government recognises tree-planting and forestry as a reliable and cost-effective way to sequester carbon.
Trees also provide a habitat for different species, including fungi, nesting birds and rare insects, boosting the biodiversity of your farm or croft. Oak trees support 2,300 species, 326 of which depend on oak for survival.
You can get guidance from an expert adviser on the benefits of trees to your business, where to access financial support, woodland creation, management and monetisation. Up to £3,2000 of funding is available through the Farm Advisory Service (FAS) for two areas of advice, including woodland management and conservation, and biodiversity, habitat and landscape management. To find out more and apply for funding, visit our Specialist Advice pages. For support choosing the best grant options and help finding an advisor, contact FAS at advice@fas.scot or 0300 323 0161.
