Mentoring in Autumn

7 October 2025

As autumn sets in over Scotland, farming and crofting activity shifts in preparation for the colder months, Calving begins, machinery is out working the land to prepare soil for next year’s crops, and herbicide applications may be underway on cereal fields. This season offers a chance to pause and plan. For new farmers and crofters, working with an experienced mentor during this time can provide the tools, guidance, and support needed to make informed decisions and drive meaningful progress.

The FAS Mentoring Grant provides up to four days of fully funded support from experienced mentors across Scotland. Whether you’re managing livestock, restoring hedgerows, or navigating business decisions, the grant connects you with someone who understands farming and crofting in Scotland.

Eligible applicants must have set up or become head of a farming business within the last five years and have a Business Reference Number (BRN). Mentors are matched to your needs, helping you build confidence and resilience.

FAS will provide your mentor up to £1,200 to fund four days of mentoring support. For more information on mentoring or to apply for funding, visit our Mentoring grant page or contact FAS at advice@fas.scot or 0300 323 0161.
