Improving Animal Health and Welfare Through Better Livestock Housing

6 October 2026

Good livestock housing is an important part of maintaining animal health and welfare. Clean, dry and well-ventilated buildings can help reduce the risk of disease, improve comfort and support productivity. Regular checks of housing, ventilation systems, water supply and bedding can help identify issues before they affect animal performance or welfare.

Housing also provides an opportunity to monitor livestock more closely, allowing early identification of health concerns and helping ensure animals receive appropriate care when needed. Maintaining adequate space, minimising stress and ensuring buildings are suitable for the needs of different classes of stock can improve overall herd or flock health and welfare.

If you are reviewing your livestock housing arrangements or looking to explore ways to improve animal health and welfare on your farm or croft, you can visit the livestock page on the FAS website.
