Calving dairy heifers at 24 months has the potential to save costs of up to £300 per animal (AHDB figures) whilst also providing benefits such as reduced calving difficulties and increased lifelong milk production.

Ensuring a stress-free transition to the herd for fresh calved cows and heifers reduces the likelihood of early lactation mastitis and body condition loss.  Careful consideration of dietary changes before and after calving can help improve this transition.

Difficult calvings retained placentas and excessive loss of body condition score soon after calving can all increase the risk of fertility problems.  Regular heat detection and herd records should provide an insight into herd fertility and problem cows should be identified, diagnosed and treated early to prevent production losses.
