Gairloch Crofting Discussion Group – Livestock Handling for Crofts & Common Grazings

Book event

Cattle and sheep handling systems can often be labour intensive, with older infrastructure being adapted alongside newer approaches. But how much do we consider the animals themselves when designing and using these systems?

Join us at the new handling set up at Opinan, South Erradale and Port Henderson Common Grazings, with Dr Simon Turner, an expert in livestock handling systems, as he shares research into cattle behaviour and explores how a better understanding of animals can help us design and use handling systems more effectively.

But why does animal behaviour matter? Understanding how temperament, maternal behaviour and animal responses can have big implications:

  • Improve animal welfare and reduce stress
  • Reduce labour requirements
  • Improve human health and safety
  • Support better animal health
  • Improve business efficiency and profitability

We will meet at the Fank at South Erradale at 11.30am, and when we’re finished head to Badachro Inn for some lunch and a quick chat about CAGS.

Please wear suitable outdoor clothing and clean boots. Lunch provided so booking is essential!
