Keeping Livestock for Young or New Crofters
Come and join us for an exciting workshop in Portree, designed for young or new crofters eager to learn the essentials of keeping cattle and sheep. The workshop will start at 11am at the Portree Community Centre, moving up to the Portree Mart after lunch for some hands-on practical sessions.
We will have both practical and theory sessions, with plenty of opportunity to practice skills and ask all your burning questions!
- Livestock Nutrition: Learn all about feeding and nutrition needs, terms, and handy tips with Lorna Shaw, SAC nutritionist.
- Hands-on Sheep Care: Practice couping sheep, checking body condition, and understanding key attributes with Siobhan Macdonald, SAC advisor.
- Vet Essentials: injection sites, diseases, sheep feet, welfare and more from Kythe MacKenzie, an SRUC Veterinary Investigation Officer.
While we’ll be discussing both cattle and sheep topics, our practical sessions will focus on sheep care (no cattle this time for safety reasons).
Please wear warm clothes and have clean wellies.
All welcome! Places are free, but spaces are limited so booking is essential! Looking forward to seeing you there!
