Housing and Cow Comfort

The housing environment can play a huge role in the health and productivity of the dairy herd, not just for the milking cows, but for dry cows and youngstock as well. Good ventilation to provide clean, fresh air will help mitigate the effects that high moisture, dust, manure gases and pathogens can have on animal health, milk output and milk quality.

Cow comfort is also crucial to milking performance and if any aspect of housing such as overstocking, inappropriate cubicle size or inadequate bedding reduces lying time, this will in turn reduce milk output.
