Calving techniques – event summary

16 February 2017

A practical evening of calving techniques with SAC vet Franz, and SAC Consultant Graham Fraser.

The event will be based on topics including, where 27 Farmers attended.

  • Practical session on calving problems using a calving simulator
  • Managing cow condition for fertility
  • Find out how bull selection can reduce calving problems
  • Estimated breeding values given and feedback

This was a very practical meeting led by Franz, SAC vet and it was very well received. The audience comprised mostly of experienced crofters and famers but there were some less experienced individuals and they all picked up tips and learnt something new.

The feedback to attendees on their bull EBVS was well received and created lots of interesting discussion with attendees.

Based on advice from the course run in Portree we did not try to cover nutritional aspects other than covering body condition scoring and the target scores to aim for. This was just as well as there was not time in an evening meeting to have done everything justice. There may be scope for a follow up nutrition meeting.

This meeting has now been run in both Skye and Shetland and Franz was very well received and there is likely to be scope for repeating the course in other parts of the highlands and Islands.
