Exploring Organic Horticulture at Pillars of Hercules Organic Farm
Recently, ‘Pillars of Hercules Organic Farm, Shop & Cafe’ in Fife was host to a guided farm tour and two workshops covering an introduction to seed saving, and flower and pot plant production. Small-scale growers came from far and wide – from the Scottish Borders to Kirriemuir, to spend the day with peers exploring the world of organic horticulture and growing. Growers learnt about soil health, soil structure, rotations, small tools and equipment, seed saving, and the work of the plant nursery to help them begin or improve their own small-scale growing initiatives. This peer-to-peer learning opportunity gave like-minded people the chance to share learnings, make new contacts, and support their wellbeing.
Many of those attending run their own community initiatives to help people with additional support needs and disabilities. Their market gardens provide a huge benefit to individuals’ confidence, physical and mental health back in their own communities.
Take-aways from the event included:
- Plan your space. You don’t need a large growing area to get started. A small allotment, space in your garden, or the corner of a field is a great way to start growing your own produce. The key to success is planning to maximise available space and efficiency.
- Saving seed has many benefits including cost savings, adaptation to local climate and soil conditions, disease resistance, and preserving heritage varieties.
- Crop rotation is important as crops have different nutrient requirements and it helps to reduce a build-up of crop-specific pests and diseases.
- If you would like to grow commercially, more information is available Soil Association Scotland or home - CSA Network UK
