Funding to Improve Soil Health

Healthy soils are fundamental to resilient and sustainable farming and crofting businesses. Improving soil health can increase nutrient cycling, enhance soil structure, improve water infiltration and retention, and support healthy crop and grass growth. These benefits can reduce input requirements, increase productivity, and strengthen resilience to extreme weather conditions.

Improving soil health can deliver benefits for both businesses and the environment. Actions such as increasing organic matter, incorporating legumes into rotations, reducing soil compaction and making effective use of manures and organic materials can all help support a thriving soil ecosystem.

The Farm Advisory Service (FAS) offers Soil and Nutrient Management specialist advice to help farmers and crofters assess soil health and identify actions to improve soil function and productivity. FAS also offers an Integrated Land Management Plan (ILMP) which can help explore how soil improvements fit within wider business, environmental and resilience goals.

With up to £3,200 of funding available for up to two specialist advice topics, and up to £2,000 towards an ILMP, expert support is available to help you make informed decisions for the future of your business.
