Grow, Learn & Thrive with FAS Support for New Entrants
29 April 2026Starting a farming or crofting business is exciting, but it also comes with a steep learning curve. As a new entrant, you may experience a range of challenges, from understanding your land and resources to navigating business planning, finance, regulations, and the day‑to‑day realities of running an agricultural enterprise. Building confidence, gaining experience and making sound decisions in those early years can be especially difficult; however, FAS is here to help.
Getting the right support early on can make a significant difference to how confidently and sustainably your business develops. Through the Farm Advisory Service (FAS), you can access two powerful forms of help: a new entrant Integrated Land Management Plan (ILMP) – which brings in an accredited adviser to review your whole business and create a clear, tailored action plan – and the FAS Mentoring Programme, which pairs you with an experienced farmer or crofter to guide you through the crucial early years. Together, these services offer structured planning, expert insight and practical, hands‑on support to help your business grow, adapt and thrive.
Up to £2,000 is available to cover up to 100% of an ILMP for businesses under five years old, and for mentoring, FAS will pay your mentor up to £1,200 to fund four days of support. For more information on mentoring and ILMPs or to apply for funding, visit our ILMP and Mentoring grant page or contact FAS at advice@fas.scot or 0300 323 0161.
