Mentoring for Next Generation Farmers & Crofters

16 July 2025

The Farm Advisory Service offers up to four days of free mentoring from experienced mentors for new entrants who have become head of a farming business within the last five years and hold a Business Reference Number (BRN). Mentors can assist with a wide range of skills required by next generation farmers and crofters in the set-up and early growth of a business, such as finance and business planning, animal welfare and livestock care, and traditional skills e.g. stone walling or hedge laying.

Experienced mentors can receive up to £1,200 payment and can come from your local community, or if you don’t know anyone suitable we can help match you with an expert depending on your needs. Any businesses which have previously received mentoring before July 2024 and are still within five years of set up can reapply. You can find further information including the online application form at https://www.fas.scot/mentoring-new-farmers-crofters/
