Mentoring Support for New Entrants: Learn from Experience and Build with Confidence

12 May 2026

Starting out in farming or crofting can be both rewarding and challenging. New entrants often face a steep learning curve as they balance practical land management with business planning, regulation, finance and everyday decision making. Having access to the right support at the right time can make a significant difference to how confidently and sustainably a new business develops.

Through the Farm Advisory Service (FAS), new entrants can access dedicated mentoring support designed to provide practical, one to one guidance during the crucial early years. The FAS Mentoring Programme pairs new entrants with an experienced farmer or crofter who understands the realities of running an agricultural or crofting business and can offer trusted advice based on real world experience.

Mentoring is tailored to the needs of the new entrant. Support might focus on enterprise development, financial management, grassland and livestock decisions, diversification, succession planning, or simply building confidence in running a business. Mentors act as a sounding board, helping new entrants think through challenges, identify opportunities and make informed decisions as their business evolves.

FAS mentoring funding covers up to four days of one to one support, with a grant of up to £1,200 available to pay for your mentor’s time. This focused support gives new entrants valuable time to explore key challenges, test ideas and gain practical insight at a pace that suits their business.

The programme also offers an opportunity for experienced farmers and crofters. If you own and run your own farming or crofting business and have valuable knowledge to share, you can apply to become a mentor. Mentors play a vital role in supporting the next generation and helping strengthen Scotland’s rural sector. Importantly, mentors receive payment for their time as FAS recognise the value of their experience and commitment.

Whether you are just starting out or looking to give something back, FAS mentoring creates meaningful connections, supports business resilience and helps ensure skills and knowledge are passed on. For new entrants, it’s a chance to learn from those who have been there before; for mentors, it’s an opportunity to guide, inspire and support the future of farming and crofting in Scotland.
