Summer Drought and Heat Stress

Summer 2026 has once again highlighted the challenges of drought and heat stress for Scotland’s farmers and crofters. Prolonged dry periods can reduce grass growth, impact crop yields, limit water availability and place additional pressure on livestock, affecting both productivity and business resilience.

Planning ahead can help reduce the impact of extreme weather. Measures such as improving water storage and efficiency, reviewing grazing management, improving soil health for water retention and providing adequate livestock shade and shelter can all help businesses adapt to hotter, drier conditions.

The Farm Advisory Service (FAS) offers specialist advice to help farmers and crofters identify practical actions that strengthen resilience to drought and heat stress. Specialist advice is available on topics such as Water Management, Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation, and Animal Welfare, helping businesses assess risks, improve resource efficiency, and develop strategies to cope with changing weather patterns.

With up to £3,200 of funding available for up to two specialist advice topics, you can access expert guidance tailored to your business needs, helping you prepare for future weather challenges while maintaining productivity and profitability.
