Women in agriculture: Caithness – Post-event summary

28 June 2018

The  meeting was held at Spittal Mains Farm, by kind permission of the Erridge & Southall Families – this was recently led by SAC Consultant Cat MacGregor.

An excellent turnout of over 30 women attended the event.  The meeting focus was very much based on Sheep Health & Management.

The practical day saw 4 dedicated stations cover off a vast range of topics by local vets Tom Southall, Fiona Sutherland and Mey Cameron.  Also in attendance was SAC Sheep Specialist Kirsten Williams.  The topics covered included –

  • Body Conditioning & Scoring
  • Fluke & Worming
  • Dosing & Best Practice for Vaccines
  • Foot Management

Under supervision, each of the ladies attending were given the opportunity to get “hands-on” and try out many of the practical aspects at each station. Handouts and leaflets were given out at the end of each 20 minute station.

The afternoon session and breakout session was based around successful “Weaning Strategies”.  This proved popular and strummed up a good discussion amongst the groups.

The busy, informative day was then wrapped up by Cat MacGregor thanking everyone for attending.

The date of the next meeting will be the 30th of October and will cover bookkeeping and finance.
