Spreading Organic Fertiliser – Get Funded Specialist Advice to Remain Compliant

18 June 2025

Organic fertilisers such as slurry, manure and anaerobic digestate can be highly beneficial when applied to land at the appropriate time and in the correct amounts. From 1 January 2023, new rules related to spreading slurry and liquid anaerobic digestate were introduced, ensuring farmers and contractors use more controlled methods of application to minimise run-off and associated emissions.

To achieve low emission precision spreading, farmers are no longer permitted to apply slurry to land using a raised splash plate or rain gun and from 1 January 2027, all slurry must be applied using precision equipment. To help farmers understand the rules and remain compliant, the Farm Advisory Service (FAS) can provide funded specialist advice on up to two topics, including soil and nutrient management and water pollution prevention and control. This advice supports farmers and crofters to make informed decisions, adopt best practices, and ensure their operations meet environmental and regulatory standards.

Up to £3,200 of funding is available through FAS for specialist advice. To find out more and apply for funding, visit our Specialist Advice page. For support choosing the best grant options and help finding an advisor, contact FAS at advice@fas.scot or 0300 323 0161.
