Selective dry cow therapy

There is increasing pressure to reduce antibiotic use in the dairy industry and selective dry cow therapy can help towards this. Using individual cell count data and mastitis history is important for selecting cows to only receive an internal teat sealant at drying off. In addition, hygiene and the correct drying off technique is critical to minimise the risk of infection during the dry period. The drying off procedure at SRUC’s Crichton Royal Farm is explained in detail in the following video.
