Carrots & Parsnips – June 2020

26 June 2020

Pests

Carrot fly egg laying is tailing off now but the cool damp weather is prolonging things a bit. Crops that were sown with seed treated with Force ST (tefluthrin) will be protected from this first generation of carrot fly grubs (EAMU 20191619).

Options for crops that have not received a seed treatment are foliar insecticide sprays targeting the adult flies, although the peak of egg-laying is now over. Foliar insecticide sprays will be needed again when the second generation of carrot flies appear towards the end of July and into August. The seed treatment will have run out of steam by then, so the foliar sprays are the only option.
