Pests in carrots & parsnips, May 2019

2 May 2019

Carrot flies are forecast to begin laying eggs in crops from early May. Crops that were sown with seed treated with Force ST (tefluthrin) will be protected from this first generation of carrot fly grubs (EAMU 20191619).
Options for crops that have not received a seed treatment are foliar insecticide sprays targeting the adult flies before egg-laying starts, with treatments every 12-14 days until egg laying by first-generation flies is over. The same will need to be done for 2nd generation carrot fly later in the season.
