Crofting Discussion Group Lewis – Mainland Visit Day 1

Crofters from Lewis and Harris will be visiting Kirkton Farm as part of a 2 day, 2 event study trip off island. Kirkton, part of Kirkton and Auchtertyre Farms is home to SRUC’s Hill & Mountain Research Centre. The island delegates will learn about how the site is farmed to include research that aims to address economic, social and environmental challenges facing hill and mountain land use systems. The farms here are of real interest for crofters, as the land ranges from inbye productive grazing to rough hill land. Also, trials are conducted with practical applications, such as no fence collars, improving swards in wet climates, and working out sheep and cattle nutrition in challenging conditions.

Event 2 will involve the group attending AgriScot on the 19th November. One of the premier agricultural events taking place at Royal Highland Centre has a full day programme, with seminars hosted by NFUS, Scot Gov, AHDB, SRUC and more, including live demonstrations and over 200 trade and exhibitor stands. An excellent opportunity for established island crofters to learn about the latest industry updates first hand, and experience technical demonstrations all under one roof.
