Shetland Aets – Preserving a Landrace

Book event

Join us for an evening exploring the importance of growing Shetland Aets.

Discover how you can support the conservation of this endangered landrace and help preserve Shetland’s critically endangered straw crafts.

We’ll be joined by small-scale growers sharing their experience cultivating Shetland Aets, along with Eve Eunson and members of the Shetland Straw Group.

The evening includes a visit to Jan and Alistair Robertson’s croft in Walls, where they are growing three oat varieties.

You’ll also get a closer look at traditional straw crafts—from straw-backed chairs and thatching, to kishie making and Skekkler’s hats—and hear how the straw group is reviving these skills and how you can help meet the growing demand for Shetland straw.
