Walking & talking trees: Winter management of a young woodland with Phil Knott

Book event

Join us with Phil as he introduces us to the award winning Wildlife Croft and its highly productive 3.8 ha. We’ll hear how the croft has expanded and diversified its existing woodland by planting locally sourced, native trees, alongside fruit trees, hedges, shrubs, wildflower meadows and ponds, to create a resilient mixed-age woodland and a haven for biodiversity. We’ll discuss the benefits that the trees have brought to the croft, including as shelter for polytunnels, and a source of firewood, charcoal, food and new tree nursery, Drumfearn Trees. We’ll talk through Phil’s winter management plans for his young woodland, including pruning, pollarding, coppicing, thinning and wood chipping, alongside future plans. We’ll also hear how Phil grows trees from seeds and cuttings for the nursery. We’ll have staff from Scottish Forestry and the Croft Woodland Project joining us to advise on the funding and support they can offer. Book your free place here. Tea, coffee, and biscuits will be provided. Find out more about the Network, its hosts, and useful information here
