Angus Soil & Nutrient Network – 2nd meeting event summary
14 February 2018The Second meeting on the Angus Soil and Nutrient Network began with a visit to Keithick Farm where there is an anaerobic digester.
Jimmy Doig the farm manager and Andrew Doig the plant manager took the group on the tour of the site where they learnt about the complexity of the renewable energy source. This included the ration and volumes which is fed into it, the process of gas extraction and the analysis of the waste produced. The simplicity of growing Winter Rye was also discussed.
The group then moved to the Redhouse Hotel where after lunch, the afternoon took the format of a presentation by Zach Reilly, SAC Consulting Forfar where he briefed the group on the importance of soil testing, the way plants utilise trace elements and finally how to interpret data to accurately apply nutrients to different crop types and soil status.
