Angus Soil & Nutrient Network – Final meeting
7 June 2018The 3rd & final Soil & Nutrient Network Meeting was held at the Finavon House Hotel. Zach Reilly, SAC Consulting, opened the meeting with a background Bogindollo Farm and the changes which have been implemented since the project began.
Audrey Litterick, Earth Care Technical, talked through the pros and cons of different organic manures, in particular the use of composts, digestates and farm yard manure.
The afternoon session was taken by John Baddeley, SRUC Research who discussed the differences in cover crops and green manures. John presented a detailed account of his research into how different plant species can compliment each other to benefit soil structure and soil nutrients.
Key messages
- Don’t under value the organic manures on your farm.
- Building soil organic mater will not happen over night.
- Decide what you want your green manure to achieve and design a crop which will meet that specification.
- The use of plant mixes can compliment each other in the right situations.

- Technical Note (TN657): Management of Copper in Soils for Cereals
- The soils of Scotland have developed from a range of complex geological parent materials that vary widely in composition. In the relatively young soils over much of the UK, the parent material remains the dominant factor in determining the soil copper status.
