Autumn Insights for New Entrants to Farming
19 November 2025If you’re a new entrant to crop farming, November is an ideal time to observe soil preparation techniques for the upcoming growing season. Farm vehicles are actively working the land, and winter wheat drilling may still be underway. For those new to livestock farming, most cattle intended for overwintering will now be housed indoors and fed regularly. Once housed, it’s essential to manage slurry and manure removal consistently to maintain hygiene and animal welfare.
Whether you’re learning about crop establishment, livestock care, or seasonal land management, connecting with experienced farmers can be a great way to build confidence. Their practical support and shared knowledge can help you make informed decisions and develop your skills across the farming year.
The FAS Mentoring Grant offers up to four days of fully funded support from experienced mentors across Scotland. To be eligible, you must have set up or become head of a farming business within the last five years and hold a Business Reference Number (BRN). FAS will fund your mentor up to £1,200.
