Make a Resolution: Plan Your Future with FAS
12 December 2025As the year draws to a close and families gather for the winter holidays, it’s the perfect time to think about the future of your farm or croft. Succession planning is often the elephant in the room—difficult to discuss, yet essential for securing your business and your family’s future.
Succession looks different for everyone. It might mean passing the farm to the next generation, retiring due to ill health, or giving up a lease. For some, it involves moving house and a major lifestyle change. Whatever your circumstances, planning ahead reduces stress and ensures a smoother transition.
The Farm Advisory Service (FAS), funded by the Scottish Government, can help. Through its specialist advice scheme, you can access up to £3,200 for two tailored advice plans, including succession planning. A professional consultant will work with you to review your options, guide decision-making, and help with essential paperwork such as wills and power of attorney. They can also support you in adjusting to life beyond farming.
Last year, 98% of farmers rated FAS advisors as good or excellent, and most planned to implement all recommended actions. Make a resolution this winter: decide what you want from your future and let FAS help you create a succession plan that works for you. For more information on mentoring or to apply for funding, visit our Specialist Advice grant page or contact FAS at advice@fas.scot or 0300 323 0161.
