Improve Your Livestock Welfare & Management With ILMPs

4 October 2023

Recognising the vital importance of keeping livestock in prime health while optimising farm practices, the Scottish Government, through the Farm Advisory Service (FAS), is extending a hand to farmers and crofters. This initiative is designed to equip them with the tools, resources, and expertise they need to thrive in this complex and fast-changing industry.

At the heart of this initiative lies the concept of Integrated Land Management Planning (ILMP). With funding of up to £1,200 available, FAS is facilitating access to expert consultancy support to develop comprehensive Integrated Land Management Plans tailored to individual farms and crofts.

Empowering Farmers Through Animal Welfare Advice

One of the thirteen specialist advice options available through FAS is aimed at revolutionising livestock sectors that lie at the foundation of our global food, health, environmental and economic systems. Animal health is a core element for sustainable development and livestock production, given that the innovation-oriented livestock sector contributes to the welfare of people and the conservation of natural resources. Sustainable development of livestock comes with the potential to improve global public health and enhance the livelihoods of the 18 % of the world’s population that depends on this sector to make a living. (FAO, 2016)

Focused on making farming more eco-friendly, while fostering successful, innovative, and diversified rural businesses, FAS is providing farmers with an opportunity to adopt livestock best practices and enhance livestock management through expert consultancy support. Taking advantage of this initiative, participants can reduce the time and energy invested in livestock management, ensuring a more efficient operation overall, while generating socially desirable outcomes.

A Holistic and Personalised Approach to Improvement

The journey begins with a qualified adviser’s visit to the farm, followed by an in-depth assessment of current management practices. This comprehensive report forms the foundation of a customised business improvement plan. Suggestions may span from implementing innovative breeding strategies and optimising feeding plans, to revamping animal housing arrangements. By embracing these advancements, farmers and crofters can create a more efficient farming environment and specialise in the sector where the maximum of their potential lies.

Driving the Future of Farming: Generating Information And Knowledge For Practice Change

The FAS commitment to elevating livestock practices across Scotland reflects a visionary approach to farming that ensures long-term success while embracing technical expertise and best practices. By providing the necessary business development advice and funding, FAS is playing a pivotal role in driving the industry forward.

Scotland’s Farm Advisory Service (FAS) is part of the Scottish Rural Development Programme (SRDP) which is funded by the Scottish Government, providing information and resources aimed at increasing the profitability and sustainability of farms and crofts.
