Smallholder Training Event – Selecting lambs fit for the Abattoir – Event Summary

14 July 2018

This small holder training event informed participants of the theory and criteria used in selecting lambs and cull ewes fit to go to the abattoir.  There was also a particle hands-on demonstration of both selection and weighing.

Take home messages:

  1. Identify the market, weights and timing that fit best with your stock and farm.
  2. Develop a good working relationship with your potential buyer, who will help you identify a suitable market for your stock and advise on when the best demand is.
  3. Regularly assess your stock for fat cover prior to sale, to maximise your price and avoid unnecessary waste.
  4. Regularly weigh your animals prior to sale so that the animals meet the basic specifications for the market you are producing for.
