Scottish Suckler Beef Support Scheme (SSBSS) – 2026 Eligibility & 410 Day Calving Interval

15 October 2026

Key Points

  • To be eligible for payment, calves must meet all the existing SSBSS eligibility requirements, as well as the new 410-day calving interval condition, unless the 10-calf small herd derogation applies.
  • Applicants do not need to provide or check the dam’s calving interval when submitting a claim. The Scottish Government will validate the calving interval using ScotEID data as part of the eligibility checks. Where a calf does not meet the 410-day requirement, it will not be eligible for payment, and no penalty will be applied.
  • The small herd derogation applies only to the 410-day calving interval condition. Herds claiming for 10 calves or fewer in a scheme year are exempt from this condition, but all other SSBSS eligibility requirements still apply.

Eligable Animals

Calves (both female and male) can be eligible for payment providing they meet all of the following criteria –

  • They are owned or leased by the claimant
  • They are born on a Scottish holding and kept there continuously from birth for at least 30 days. KEY POINT – Scottish Government consider an animal to be one day old on the day after it was born i.e. calves born on or after 2 December 2026 are not eligible until the next scheme year (2027) as an animal born on 2 December is not 30 days old until after 1 January
  • They have a valid passport and have been officially identified
  • They have not previously received a SSBSS payment
  • They are at least 75% beef bred
  • They are reared for beef production as part of a suckler beef herd

Calving Interval 410-day Requirement

In addition to the above eligibility requirements, from 2025, the Scottish Government introduced a new calving interval condition for the scheme.  The purpose of this addition is to reduce support for technically inefficient production, encourage improved herd management and reduce funding associated with excess greenhouse gas emissions from cows with extended calving intervals.

How does the 410-day rule work?

Calves are now only eligible for a SSBSS payment if their dam has a calving interval threshold of 410 days or less, or if the calf is the first registered birth associated with that dam i.e. heifers’ calves will be exempt from the calving interval condition.

The calving interval relates to individual animals, and not the herd average. The Scottish Government have confirmed that the 410-day requirement will remain unchanged for 2027 claims.

KEY POINT – Calves are only eligible for payment if their dam has a calving interval of 410 days or less provided that all other scheme eligibility conditions are met i.e. are 75% beef bred and are born on a Scottish holding and kept there continuously from birth for at least 30 days.

Applicants do not need to provide or check the dam’s calving interval when submitting a claim. As part of eligibility checks, Scottish Government will assess calving intervals after the claim has been submitted using ScotEID data.

Derogation For 10 Calves Or Fewer

From 2026 onwards, a derogation has been introduced for the calving interval condition to any herds claiming a total of 10 calves or fewer in a scheme year. Those herds claiming for 10 calves or fewer will not need to meet the 410-day calving interval condition.

KEY POINT – This derogation only applies to the calving interval condition. All claimed animals will still need to meet the other SSBSS eligibility requirements to be eligible to receive a payment.

The derogation is based on the total number of calves claimed during the scheme year and will be applied automatically when claims are processed.

Force Majeure (Unforeseen Circumstance)

The decision on whether a situation is recognised as a case of force majeure/ exceptional circumstances which has resulted in inability to comply with the rules of the scheme will be assessed on a case-by-case basis with relevant documentary evidence provided. Businesses must be able to provide documentary evidence which demonstrates that the event which prevented them from meeting their scheme obligations was an abnormal circumstance e.g. the death of the beneficiary or severe natural disaster gravely affecting the holding.

Payment Rates

The payment rate (£ Sterling) for eligible animals is not fixed and can vary from year to year. The rate depends on the total number of eligible animals claimed during the scheme year. Payment rates are normally confirmed in March following the end of the scheme year.

The payment rates for 2025 were as follows;

  • Mainland: £127.20 per animal (+£15.87 from 2024)
  • Islands: £175.90 per animal (+£20.87 from 2024)
