Thinning And Harvesting Your Woodland – event summary

9 March 2017

We had a very successful day with many farmers and forestry contractors attending the event at Meadows Farm on Thursday 9th March.

This event allowed attendees to learn about harvesting and thinning their woodlands.

Below are a few key points from the day;

  • Our hosts, Ivan and Louise Owen, explained why they had converted most of their farm to productive forestry.
  • Farmer and woodland owner Mike Davis demonstrated a timber trailer bought with the assistance of the Forestry Grant Scheme.
  • Julia Garritt from Forestry Commission Scotland  passed out a new leaflet on Forests and Water.  Attendees appreciated the new cab sticker which gives information on safe distances for working near water.
  • Available Grant aid for owners of small woodlands to create roads and loading areas was detailed by SAC Forestry Consultant Simon Jacyna.
  • Paul Chapman gave a talk on conservation.

Thanks to Cameron Gillies from Euroforest who had carried out the thinning operation.

Please have a look at the events agenda for a full list of topic discussions.
