Whole Farm Plan (WFP) Advice

5 January 2026

The Whole Farm Plan (WFP) is a way of measuring how efficient your current agricultural practices are and identifying opportunities to make improvements. The WFP applies to all agricultural businesses that claim Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) support.

To receive BPS payments, every farmer and crofter in Scotland must demonstrate that they have started to review and baseline their current land and livestock management practices and are considering appropriate actions that will ensure their future agricultural activities are sustainable, efficient and resilient.

If you are claiming BPS support, you will need to complete at least two of the following plans or audits by 15 May 2026:

  • Carbon audit
  • Biodiversity audit
  • Soil analysis
  • Animal health
  • Welfare plan
  • Integrated pest management plan

A carbon audit provides you with an estimated carbon footprint helping you to identify potential opportunities to improve efficiency and reduce costs and emissions. For the WFP, your carbon audit must have been completed within the last 5 years.
