Women in Agriculture – Borders – Event Summary

17 April 2018

The very first FAS Women in Agriculture meeting was held at Carfraemill.

Agricultural consultant Andrew Baird welcomed attendees to the meeting and gave an introduction to the programme.  After the attendees had introduced themselves, local farmer Andrea Walker spoke to the room about her life as a woman in agriculture.

Andrea and her husband Charley started off their farming career with 50 sheep on a local football pitch!  They now have a tenancy at Barnside near Abbey St Bathans, and were recently awarded Agriscot’s Sheep Farm of the Year.

Chartered Accountant Karen Scholes led the morning session with a focus on tax.  Karen’s talk was very informative and well received, with a lot of interaction and questions.

After lunch, Alasdair Scott discussed how you can get more from your accounts.  He talked through the key targets for gross output analysis and what a bank manager would expect to see from a business proposal.

The meeting finished with an ideas gathering session on future meeting topics.
