Sustainable Sheep Systems – “Ewe are what ewe eat” (video)
Ewe nutrition in the 8 weeks pre-lambing is essential to ensure the ewe receives sufficient energy and protein to support the growth of the unborn lambs and milk production. The start of 2021 has seen many areas of Scotland enduring prolonged periods of snow covered fields. This is having an unexpected negative impact on silage stocks. Coupled with a steady price increase in protein and sheep concentrates, many farmers are reviewing their options to ensure there is a balance between ewes having sufficient access to supplemented feed and preserving stocks. In this webinar, Nutritionist Mary Young (SAC Consulting), covers a range of options to help manage this balance including ewe energy requirements pre-lambing, forage quality, feed availability, the use of mineral buckets and how to calculate forage budgeting.
