Tools and Resources for Identifying Habitats
21 July 2025Identifying habitats allows you to better understand what exists on your farm or croft and the condition of these habitats. This can help you to prioritise management actions or the creation of new habitats. Identifying habitats now can also make the completion of a biodiversity audit under the Whole Farm Plan easier.
FAS have a range of resources to assist you in habitat identification and we have linked some key ones below including a handy guide for the online tools that can help you assess biodiversity on your farm.
A new app for Scottish biodiversity
For those who are looking to complete a biodiversity audit that meets the Whole Farm Plan criteria, the Farm Biodiversity Scotland app is now accepting new users. You can sign up to the app either through the Nature Scot website or via the App Store for iPhones or the Playstore for Android mobile phones.
Within the app, a pilot list of habitat assessments has been launched. These are available for farmers, crofters and land managers to test between July and September.
The habitat assessments currently available include Field Margins; Hedges; Peatland; Wet Marshy Grassland and Semi-improved/unimproved grassland.
There is £100 available to farmers if they test 5 or more of the habitat assessments.
You can find out more about this at the Farm Biodiversity Project page on the Nature Scot website- Farm Biodiversity Project | NatureScot
