Deer Farming in Scotland – Balmakewan Farm
Join us, along with the Venison Advisory Service, SRUC Vets, and SAC Consulting to talk about the exciting developments going on at Balmakewan and how you could apply their learnings to your own farm.
Balmakewan currently have 150 breeding hinds and are building a butchery with plans to direct sell their venison. Balmakewan is in the process of organic conversion and the deer are the livestock element. They also have an organic vegetable box business which is going well.
Most of the finished deer go to Dovecote Park at the moment but they would like to move away from that and supply the local market. They have an excellent deer handling system which VAS designed to fit into an existing shed. Caroline Robinson, SRUC Vet, will also be in attendance to speak about what they are trying to achieve with the enclosed deer survey and discuss the questions.
Lunch provided.
