Forage for Profit Discussion

We will be joining Hamish Cottle on his sheep, beef and outdoor pig farm in Timaru New Zealand for a virtual farm tour.  Hamish established his 100% free range outdoor pig unit in 2012 with 50 sows.  Now running at 200 sows Hamish uses the pigs as the entry to his 5 year crop rotation, cultivating and adding fertility to his soils.  The expansion of the pigs has provided the income to facilitate Hamishs first love – Texel sheep, now running at 1300 plus 400 hoggets with plans to expand to 2500.  Hamish uses forage crop and combination herbal leys and Lucerne for the wintering of stock and to combat the summer dry conditions on New Zealand East Coast.  Hamish will give us a tour of the farm virtually and then be on hand to answer any questions.
